World Mental Health Day: “Mental Health at Work”

This year’s Mental Health Awareness Day theme focuses on "Mental Health at Work." This theme highlights the critical role that workplace environments play in our mental well-being and the importance of fostering supportive, healthy workplaces.

Unfortunately, a recent study published by AXA in August 2024 has identified a significant issue amongst Hong Kong employees. Below are the statistics analyzed:

Prevalence of Mental Health Issues - 77% of workers in Hong Kong have experienced at least one mental health issue related to their work environment. This indicates a widespread challenge affecting the majority of the workforce.

Burnout Rates - 49% of employees reported suffering from burnout, a dramatic increase from 22% in 2023. This sharp rise underscores the growing mental health crisis in the workplace.

Sick Leave Due to Mental Health - Nearly 48% of employees have taken sick leave specifically for mental health reasons. This statistic highlights the tangible impact of mental health issues on attendance and productivity.

Workplace Disengagement - 82% of workers have considered disengaging from work as a coping mechanism for their mental health challenges. This reflects a significant level of dissatisfaction and distress among employees.

Common Mental Health Symptoms - Employees reported various mental health symptoms, including:

     - 61% experience excessive tiredness and energy loss.
     - 52% face uncontrollable stress and anxiety.
     - 51% have difficulties concentrating or making decisions.
     - 49% suffering from sleep disturbances.
     - 39% dealing with eating disorders

Desire for Improved Support - 53% of the workforce desired better responses from their companies regarding burnout. Additionally, 63% indicated that mental health benefits and initiatives are crucial in their decision to remain with their employer.

The statistics from 2024 reveal a concerning landscape for mental health in the workplace in Hong Kong. With a significant portion of the workforce experiencing mental health issues, employers must take proactive measures to support their employees. This includes enhancing mental health resources, fostering a supportive work environment, and addressing mental health stigma. Without support, companies may risk losing their most significant asset: their employees.
